Walkability brings a multitude of positive aspects to communities and individuals alike. First and foremost, it promotes physical well-being by encouraging people to engage in regular exercise through walking, thereby reducing the risk of various health issues. It fosters a stronger sense of community, as walkable neighborhoods often feature inviting public spaces and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, fostering social interactions and a greater sense of belonging. Additionally, walkability supports local economies, as it boosts foot traffic to businesses, creating economic opportunities and sustaining vibrant commercial districts. Environmentally, it contributes to cleaner air and reduced carbon emissions by decreasing the reliance on cars. Lastly, walkability reduces traffic congestion and enhances overall mobility, making our cities more accessible and enjoyable places to live and visit. In essence, walkability is a catalyst for healthier, happier, and more sustainable communities.

Smart growth offers a transformative approach to urban and regional development that brings about a host of positive outcomes. It promotes efficient land use, fostering compact, mixed-use communities that reduce sprawl and preserve open spaces. This approach enhances transportation options, making walking, biking, and public transit more accessible and reducing reliance on automobiles, thus decreasing traffic congestion and air pollution. Smart growth also nurtures vibrant, economically resilient communities by encouraging the revitalization of urban cores and supporting local businesses. It prioritizes affordable housing options and promotes equity, ensuring that diverse populations can thrive together. Arts and culture play a pivotal role in the placemaking efforts of any community. They infuse vibrancy and identity into spaces, transforming them from mere locations into meaningful gathering places. Public art installations, festivals, theaters, and galleries not only beautify areas but also foster a sense of pride and belonging among residents. These cultural elements serve as powerful tools for storytelling, preserving heritage, and bridging diverse communities through shared experiences. Moreover, arts and culture attract tourism, boost local economies, and support creative industries, creating jobs and generating revenue. In essence, arts and culture are integral components of placemaking, breathing life, character, and a sense of purpose into the very heart of our neighborhoods and cities. They make spaces not just attractive but deeply meaningful and memorable.
Matt Peacock is owner and principal architect for Peacock Design, LLC; and he has served in that role since 2015. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, with a BS in Architecture and emphasis in Philosophy. He is an alumni of Leadership Oklahoma, Leadership Oklahoma City, Leadership Norman, the Nature Conservancy’s Leadership Academy, and the Citizen's Police Academy. Matthew has served on the board of directors for many local non-profit organizations, and has also served as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Norman. He is currently the Ward 8 Norman City Councilmember, and Mayor Pro-Tem.
The reason that I chose architecture as my professional career, is that this role allows me to pursue projects which I feel make a significant contribution to our built environment. But more importantly it gives me the platform to go out and advocate for the issues that I am most passionate about. My desire to serve on the Norman City Council is rooted in this same foundation. These efforts are focused around placemaking; with an emphasis on smart growth, walkability, sustainability, and the arts in order to develop healthy, vibrant communities. I am a champion for these as community building blocks, and I strive to align the people and resources necessary to advance them in a positive vision for our city. These types of projects are my passion because of the impact that they have on their surroundings, both culturally as well as economically. When we renew our history instead of tearing it down, it only strengthens our community identity.
I have been extremely blessed and fortunate to represent Ward 8 for the past several years, and I am very proud of what we have been able to accomplish in that time; but I also know that there are unprecedented challenges and opportunities lying ahead of us. We as a community are being faced with many potentially large scale changes, and they will require both a soft touch and clear vision in order to be successful, not a heavy hand or personal agendas. Given my professional experience as an architect and urban designer, paired with my civic experience as a planning commissioner and councilmember, I am confident that I have the skill set and independent voice necessary to lead Ward 2 through these important times.
I also very much feel a sense of unfinished business, and have many ongoing initiatives that will seize the momentum we have seen as a city and propel us to being an even greater city in the coming decades. Whether that is ensuring a pedestrian focus across the city, championing the Strong Towns principles as it relates to smart growth, leveraging the arts as a way to create a place, or finding compassionate solutions to our housing crisis, I hope that you will join me as we move forward together.
